State begins roll out of new modernized 911 system

SANTA FE – New Mexico has started upgrading its 911 system to a modern internet-based system that can accept text messages, photos, videos, and more accurate location information from callers.

The Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) is working with local emergency dispatch centers to roll out the new system across the state over the coming months. The new system shifts to a technology called ‘Next Generation 911’ which is a modernization of the 911 emergency system that utilizes internet protocol technology to enhance communication and data transfer capabilities.

“This is a major step forward for public safety in New Mexico,” said DFA Secretary Wayne Propst. “The new upgraded Next Generation 911 system brings our emergency services into the modern era and provides local dispatch centers with the tools they need to better serve their communities.”

The rollout follows years of planning and coordination between DFA’s NM-911 Bureau, county and municipal governments, and public safety professionals across New Mexico. The transition to the new Next Generation 911 system will be implemented in phases, beginning with early-adopting local emergency dispatch centers and expanding statewide in the coming months.

DFA will continue to provide technical support, additional funding, and training resources to ensure a smooth and successful transition for all local emergency dispatch centers to ensure complete Next Generation911 coverage in New Mexico.
