State invests $2 million for safer, healthier animal shelters
SANTA FE — Seventeen animal shelters across New Mexico will receive nearly $2 million to improve the care and sheltering of domestic cats and dogs.
Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) administers the New Mexico Animal Welfare Program, which provides a framework for ongoing state support of animal welfare initiatives focused on the care and sheltering of cats and dogs.
Funded projects address facility construction, renovation, and equipment needs:
- City of Aztec – $28,032 for new HVAC systems.
- City of Bayard – $290,600 for kennel construction, HVAC, drainage, and storage upgrades.
- City of Belen – $40,000 for kennel renovations.
- City of Carlsbad – $203,500 for lobby renovations, expansion, and a veterinary surgical area.
- Town of Carrizozo – $184,000 for HVAC, structural, and outdoor renovations.
- Town of Edgewood – $40,000 for a quarantine and isolation building.
- City of Grants – $100,000 for outdoor kennel expansion and fencing.
- City of Hobbs – $220,000 for drainage, ventilation, and noise control improvements at Animal Adoption Center
- Pueblo of Isleta – $79,141.20 for temporary animal housing and quarantine facilities.
- City of Las Cruces – $125,000 for surgical suite renovation and expansion at Animal Services Center of the Mesilla
- Village of Logan – $20,000 for kennel repairs and safety upgrades.
- City of Moriarty – $15,000 for fencing, play yard, and drainage improvements.
- City of Portales – $194,953 for a mobile kennel building.
- City of Santa Rosa – $74,818 for a secure storage unit.
- County of Sierra – $75,000 for additional kennels, runs, and shade structures.
- City of Socorro – $40,000 for fencing, door, and boiler upgrades.
- County of Torrance – $125,000 for feline housing and a dog washing station.
