NG911 Call Handling Equipment

Bringing NG911 to the Telecommunicator
The PSAP call-handling system is where the statewide NG911 environment connects directly with the telecommunicator answering an emergency call.
Call-handling equipment provides the tools needed to receive, answer and process 911 calls and associated location and other emergency information. To successfully transition New Mexico to NG911, each PSAP needed call-handling technology capable of interoperating with the statewide NG911 environment.

A Statewide Modernization Effort
New Mexico's transition to NG911 call handling was a multi-year effort.
Beginning in 2019, the NM 911 Bureau began a coordinated effort to modernize call-handling systems throughout the state and establish a statewide baseline of NG911-capable technology. The effort continued through 2025 as PSAPs replaced legacy equipment, implemented NG911-capable systems and completed the transition to the statewide NG911 environment.
This work required coordination among the NM 911 Bureau, local governments, PSAPs and technology providers. It also required planning around procurement, installation, network connectivity, interoperability testing, training, system acceptance and ongoing support.
By the statewide NG911 rollout, PSAPs throughout New Mexico had been equipped with call-handling technology capable of connecting to the NG911 environment. The transition to NG911 was the result of years of planning and coordination among the NM 911 Bureau, local governments and public safety professionals.
A Sustainable Technology Lifecycle
Call-handling equipment is a significant and recurring investment of the NM 911 Fund.
The Bureau has historically managed call-handling technology around a five- to six-year replacement cycle, balancing the need to maintain reliable equipment with the pace of change in 911 technology.
This approach recognizes that call handling is not a one-time capital purchase. Maintaining a statewide 911 system requires continuous investment in both the technology and the services that keep it operational.
The Next Generation of Call Handling
Future call-handling modernization will increasingly consider cloud-based and hybrid architectures.
Rather than treating the call-handling workstation as a standalone on-premises system, future solutions may combine locally deployed equipment with cloud-hosted software, services and infrastructure.
NM 911 will continue to evaluate these technologies based on reliability, security, interoperability, lifecycle cost, operational requirements and the needs of New Mexico's PSAPs.
The goal is not simply to replace today's call-handling systems. It is to establish a sustainable technology lifecycle that keeps New Mexico's PSAPs connected to a modern, reliable and evolving NG911 environment.
